Description

Norvin Richards, The Ethics of Parenthood (New York: Oxford University Press, 2010), 295 pp. Over the past two decades, a growing number of philosophers have written about moral issues arising in the parent-child relationship. Much of this work focuses on the rights of children and argues for their centrality in our thinking about the parent-child relationship. Although some philosophers have been critical of this "child-centered" approach, few have offered plausible, detailed alternatives. Norvin Richards's book does this. Although Richards does not deny the existence and importance of children's rights, he suggests that much of the moral landscape of the parent-child relationship is shaped at least as much by the rights of parents as it is by the child's rights (16).
